The Premier League — also known as the English Premier League or the EPL — was founded in February 1992 when the top-flight clubs broke away from the Football League to form a new competition under the Football Association. It launched with 22 clubs, reduced to 20 in 1995, and has since become the most-watched domestic football league in the world, broadcast to over 200 territories and watched by an audience of more than 4.7 billion across each season.

The Premier League season runs from August to May, with most fixtures played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons — Monday and Friday night windows are added for broadcast coverage. Each of the 20 clubs plays 38 matches: 19 opponents, home and away, for a total of 380 fixtures across the season. The Boxing Day round (26 December) and the New Year's Day fixtures are season highlights, packing every club into a 48-hour window of football.

At the end of every season, the bottom three clubs are relegated to the EFL Championship and three clubs come up — the top two automatically promoted, plus a play-off winner from places three through six. The top four finish in the Champions League, places five and six head to the Europa League, and seventh earns a Conference League play-off spot. From 2024/25 onward an additional Champions League place can be earned via the UEFA coefficient — meaning up to five English clubs can qualify in any season.

Premier League grounds — Anfield, Old Trafford, the Emirates, the Etihad, Stamford Bridge, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and St James' Park — are among the loudest and most televised stadiums in world football. Highest-demand fixtures every season are the Manchester derby, the Merseyside derby (Liverpool vs Everton), the North London derby (Arsenal vs Tottenham), and any club hosting Manchester City, Liverpool or Arsenal at home.

The biggest title-defining matches typically fall in the back half of the season — late-March through early-May — when title contenders meet in the run-in. Champions League weeks (Tuesday and Wednesday nights through to early June) and cup-final weekends are also peak windows for ticket demand and price spikes.
