Schoolmaster James Allan founded Sunderland in 1879. The 'Team of All Talents' became England's first great league dynasty, winning three championships in four seasons from 1891/92; three more arrived before the Second World War, followed by the club's first FA Cup in 1937.

Sunderland's most famous day came in 1973. As a Second Division side, Bob Stokoe's team beat holders Leeds 1-0 at Wembley through Ian Porterfield's goal and Jimmy Montgomery's double save, producing one of the FA Cup's defining upsets.

The club left Roker Park for the Stadium of Light in 1997 and soon posted consecutive seventh-place Premier League finishes. Relegation to League One in 2018 was captured in a global documentary; promotion in 2022 and a 2025 play-off win completed the climb back to the top flight.

The Stadium of Light is a continuous bowl, so sightlines are good almost everywhere and price tracks height and centrality more than which stand you choose. The West Stand — named after Jimmy Montgomery — is the largest side at roughly 17,000, carries the halfway line and the TV gantry, and its central lower blocks are the dearest seats in the ground.

The East Stand, about 11,000, faces it and usually costs less for a comparable view. Behind the goals, the Roker End to the south holds around 8,000 and takes its name from the club's old ground, while the North Stand, about 13,000, is the taller end and houses the away allocation in its upper tier.
