Background

Liverpool FC club history

Liverpool are English football's most decorated European club — six-time champions of Europe — and record-equalling 20-time English champions. Home is Anfield, where the Kop's 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before kick-off is one of sport's great sights.

Founded in 1892, Liverpool were transformed by Bill Shankly in the 1960s — he built not just a team but an identity: the Kop, the boot room, and an unbreakable bond with the city. His successor Bob Paisley made them the dominant force in Europe, winning three European Cups between 1977 and 1981.

The 1980s brought more titles but also two tragedies that reshaped English football — Heysel in 1985 and Hillsborough in 1989, where 97 supporters lost their lives. The fight for justice became a decades-long cause woven into the club's soul.

A 30-year wait for a league title finally ended in 2019–20 under Jürgen Klopp, a year after he'd delivered a sixth European Cup in Madrid. Arne Slot's side then reclaimed the title in 2024–25 — a record-equalling 20th English championship.

Honours. 20 league titles (joint English record) · 6 European Cups / Champions Leagues (most of any English club) · 8 FA Cups · a record 10 League Cups · 3 UEFA Cups / Europa Leagues.

The ground. Anfield has been Liverpool's home since 1892, now expanded to around 61,000 after new Main Stand and Anfield Road ends. The single-tier Spion Kop is the club's spiritual heart; the 'This Is Anfield' sign in the tunnel and 'You'll Never Walk Alone' under the floodlights make European nights there among the most intense in the game.

Getting to Anfield

Liverpool · 61,276 capacity · Opened 1884

Anfield has been Liverpool FC's home since 1892. The 12,390-seat Kop is the most iconic terrace in English football. The recent expansion of the Anfield Road End brought capacity to 61,276 — third-largest club ground in the country after Old Trafford and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Public transport: Sandhills station is a 15-minute walk; alternatively, the Soccerbus runs from there on matchdays.

Seating at Anfield

Anfield has four stands. The Kop is the famous single-tier home end behind the south goal — the atmosphere seats, and usually mid-range on price. The Main Stand is the tallest, with three tiers along the touchline; its central upper rows offer the classic TV-angle view at a premium.

The Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand runs along the opposite touchline over two tiers, and the expanded Anfield Road End behind the north goal holds two tiers, with the away allocation in its corner. Upper-tier Anfield Road seats are typically the best-value way into the ground.
