Seating

Where to sit at Portman Road

  • Sir Bobby Robson Stand

The two-tier north home end and Portman Road's strongest atmosphere. Lower central blocks are closest to the singing; upper rows offer a more complete end-on view.

  • Sir Alf Ramsey Stand

The south end behind the opposite goal, with family seating in parts of the stand. It is generally calmer than the Sir Bobby Robson end.

  • Magnus Group West Stand

The main three-tier touchline stand with the tunnel, dugouts and premium areas. Central middle-tier seats provide Portman Road's best tactical view.

  • Cobbold Stand

The older east side sits close to the pitch and contains the visiting allocation, usually in the upper tier. Pillars affect some sightlines, so read restricted-view notes.

Background

Ipswich Town club history

Ipswich Town are one of English football's great small-club achievers — league champions under Alf Ramsey, FA Cup and UEFA Cup winners under Bobby Robson, and back in the Premier League for 2026/27.

1878

Formed as an amateur club

1962

Champions of England at the first attempt

1978

FA Cup winners

1981

UEFA Cup winners

Ipswich were formed as an amateur club in 1878, turned professional in 1936 and joined the Football League two years later. Alf Ramsey then produced one of the game's great climbs: Third Division South champions in 1957, Second Division champions in 1961 and champions of England in 1962 at the first attempt.

Bobby Robson created the club's second golden age. A homegrown, tightly built side won the 1978 FA Cup against Arsenal and the 1981 UEFA Cup over AZ Alkmaar, while finishing league runners-up twice. Portman Road also supplied England managers in both Ramsey and Robson.

Ipswich were founding Premier League members and returned for a celebrated fifth-place finish in 2000/01, but later spent four years in League One. Consecutive promotions under Kieran McKenna brought the club back to the top flight in 2024, and another promotion in 2026 restored Premier League status.

Honours. League champions (1962) · FA Cup (1978) · UEFA Cup (1981) · second-tier champions (1961, 1968, 1992) · founding members of the Premier League.

The ground. Portman Road has been Ipswich's home since 1884 and sits only a short walk from the town centre and railway station. Four distinct stands preserve its traditional shape; the Sir Bobby Robson Stand is the home end, while away support occupies part of the older Cobbold Stand.

Biggest rivalries

  • Norwich City. The East Anglian derby — the Old Farm — is Ipswich's defining rivalry and the biggest club fixture in the region.
  • Colchester United. A closer geographic rivalry within Essex and Suffolk, most relevant when the clubs meet in league or cup competition.
  • Cambridge United. A regional contest with less history than Norwich but added edge whenever their paths cross in the EFL or cups.

Getting to Portman Road

Ipswich · 30,294 capacity · Opened 1884

Portman Road has hosted Ipswich Town since 1884 and now holds just over 30,000. Four distinct stands and a location between the railway station and town centre make it one of the division's most traditional, accessible grounds.

Public transport: Ipswich railway station is about a five-to-ten-minute walk from the ground.

Away fans: Visiting supporters sit in designated upper-tier blocks of the Cobbold Stand.

Seating at Portman Road

The Sir Bobby Robson Stand is the two-tier home end; the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand sits behind the south goal. The Magnus Group West Stand is the main three-tier side with the dugouts, while the older Cobbold Stand faces it.

Away supporters use the Cobbold upper tier, where supporting pillars can affect views. The Sir Bobby Robson end is the atmosphere pick; central West Stand seats carry the premium.
