The EFL Cup — known commercially as the Carabao Cup since 2017 under sponsorship from the Thai energy drink brand, and previously branded the League Cup, Milk Cup, Littlewoods Cup, Rumbelows Cup, Coca-Cola Cup, Worthington Cup and Carling Cup across earlier sponsorship eras — is England's secondary cup competition, first contested in the 1960/61 season at the suggestion of then-Football League secretary Alan Hardaker. It is organised by the English Football League and open to all 92 clubs in the Premier League and EFL.

The competition runs from August through to the final in late February or early March — making it the first major piece of silverware decided each English football season, well before the FA Cup and Premier League titles are settled in May. Lower-division clubs (League One and League Two) enter at the first round in early August; Premier League clubs without European football enter at the second round; clubs in European competition enter at the third round in late September, slotted around the Champions League and Europa League midweek schedule.

All ties through to the semi-final are single-leg with extra time and penalties to decide draws — no replays, distinguishing it from the FA Cup which historically relied on replay rounds. The two-legged semi-final (one home, one away) sits in early-to-mid January, and the single-leg final is held at Wembley Stadium under the arch on a Sunday in late February or early March. The competition winner earns Europa League qualification for the following season, provided they are not already qualified for European football via Premier League finishing position.

Wembley Stadium hosts the final, and most quarter-final and semi-final ties are played at Premier League grounds drawn from earlier rounds. Carabao Cup ticket prices are some of the most accessible at top-flight venues — early-round ties at Premier League grounds often list at £10-£25, with clubs traditionally rotating squads and fielding academy players and youth-team graduates through to the quarter-finals. Away allocations are typically more generous than league fixtures at the same ground.

Liverpool is the competition's most decorated club with 10 titles, followed by Manchester City with 8 and Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa each among the multi-time winners. The competition has a strong tradition of producing surprise winners — Swansea City (2013), Birmingham City (2011), Middlesbrough (2004) and Leicester City (2000) have all lifted the trophy in the modern era as clubs outside the traditional top six. Final tickets follow the same dual-club allocation model as the FA Cup, with a public ballot component handled by the EFL alongside corporate and member allocations.
