About the Carabao Cup

The Carabao Cup is the EFL Cup, run since 1960 under a succession of sponsors — the Milk Cup, the Worthington Cup and the Carling Cup among them. All ninety-two clubs in the Premier League and EFL enter, which is what gives the competition its character: a League Two side can be drawn against a European regular, at home, on a Tuesday night.

For a buyer it is usually the cheapest way into a Premier League ground all season. Managers rotate heavily in the early rounds, demand is lower than for league fixtures, and away allocations are often more generous. The trade-off is honest enough — you may not see a first-choice side.

How it works

One match, and penalties if it is level

Every tie through to the quarter-finals is a single match. There is no extra time outside the final: a draw after ninety minutes goes straight to a shoot-out, which has been the rule since 2018 and is worth knowing when you plan the last train. The semi-finals are the exception, played over two legs in January.

Entry is staggered. Lower-division clubs start in August, Premier League clubs without European football join at the second round, and the nine in European competition enter at the third in September — which is why the third-round draw is the one neutrals watch.

Value

The cheapest route into a top-flight ground

Early-round ties at Premier League grounds routinely list below anything else on the calendar, for two reasons that both work in a buyer's favour: squads are rotated, and demand is lower than for league fixtures. Away allocations tend to be larger than the same clubs manage in the league.

Prices climb through the rounds and peak at the semi-finals and the final. If a Wembley ticket is the target, the useful moment is as soon as your club's involvement is confirmed rather than after the draw is made.

A Wembley final and a European place

The final is at Wembley on 21 March 2027, and the winner takes a place in the play-off round of the following season's UEFA Conference League — not the Europa League, which is where League Cup winners went for most of the competition's history.

Liverpool lead the all-time roll with ten wins. Manchester City are on nine after beating Arsenal in the 2026 final at Wembley.
