History

About London Stadium

The London Stadium was originally built as the Olympic Stadium for the 2012 Olympic Games, hosting the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and athletics events. After the Games, a £323 million reconfiguration converted the venue for football, with West Ham United moving from their long-time home Boleyn Ground (Upton Park) in 2016. The athletics track was retained beneath retractable seating that can be moved closer to the pitch for football fixtures.

The seating bowl is the largest among Premier League grounds. But the original athletics-track design means the front row sits further from the pitch than at any other Premier League stadium. Retractable seating near the East and West stands brings supporters closer for football fixtures, but the gap is still notably larger than at purpose-built football grounds.
