History

About Stamford Bridge

Stamford Bridge opened on 28 April 1877. Initially used for athletics. In 1905, owner Gus Mears founded Chelsea Football Club specifically to play at the ground after Fulham declined to relocate. The ground predates Chelsea by 28 years. Multiple redevelopments followed: the East Stand (1973), West Stand (1997), Matthew Harding Stand (1994), and Shed End (1997). Plans for a major redevelopment to ~60,000 seats were paused by the club in 2018.

Seating layout

Stamford Bridge seating plan & capacity

Stamford Bridge is a tight, atmospheric ground. The seating bowl is complete. No gaps at the corners, which means crowd noise carries efficiently. Premium seats sit in the lower-middle tier of the East Stand. The Shed Lower has the most vocal home support.

  • East Stand

Three-tier main stand, with the dressing rooms, executive boxes, and press facilities. Tallest stand at the ground.

  • West Stand

Three-tier stand opposite the East. Redeveloped 1997 to add hospitality. Houses the directors' box.

  • Matthew Harding Stand

Two-tier stand at the north end. Named after the Chelsea director who died in 1996. Home of vocal Chelsea support.

  • Shed End

Two-tier stand at the south. Historic home of the most fervent Chelsea supporters. Houses the away allocation in the corner (around 3,000).
