History

About Old Trafford

Old Trafford has been Manchester United's home since 19 February 1910, designed by Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, the original ground hosted its first fixture against Liverpool. Won 4-3 by the visitors. Severe bomb damage during the Second World War forced the club to play home games at Maine Road from 1941 to 1949 while the ground was rebuilt. Successive expansions through the 1990s and 2000s lifted capacity from 56,000 to today's 74,158, making Old Trafford the largest club ground in English football.

The Stretford End is the traditional home end, while central Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton Stand seats give side-on views. Away supporters use designated south-east corner blocks. Check the exact seat, supporter designation and entrance rather than relying on the stand name alone.

• Sir Bobby Charlton Stand (South)

  The smaller south-side stand, named after Sir Bobby Charlton in 2016. It runs along the touchline with the dugouts, TV gantry and central hospitality seating.

• Sir Alex Ferguson Stand (North)

  Three-tier stand opposite the South. Tallest of the four at 197 feet, named after Manchester United's most successful manager in 2011.

• Stretford End (West)

  Behind the goal. Historically the heart of United's most vocal home support, two tiers.

• East Stand

  Behind the goal opposite the Stretford End. The away allocation is in the south-east corner where it meets the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand; nearby blocks are home seating.

How to get to Old Trafford

Metro / Tram

Old Trafford, Wharfside and Trafford Bar are useful Metrolink stops within walking distance. Choose the stop for your stadium entrance and allow extra time for matchday queues.

Train

Arrive in central Manchester by train and connect to Metrolink for the ground. Check the current Bee Network route and service information before travelling.

Bus

Stagecoach 250, 255 and 256 services run to Sir Matt Busby Way on matchdays.

Walk

From Manchester city centre via the canal towpath: roughly 35-40 minutes on foot.

Drive

Take the M60 (junction 7) to A56 (Chester Road). Approach via Sir Matt Busby Way.

Parking

Stadium car parks (E1, E2, N1, N3) require pre-booking through Manchester United and sell out quickly. Public parking at Trafford Centre with shuttle service is the most reliable matchday option.
