Background
Sunderland club history
Sunderland are the Black Cats, six-time champions of England with one of the largest and most loyal followings in the country. The Stadium of Light reflects Wearside's industrial past and keeps the memory of Roker Park alive.

The Team of All Talents, Wembley 1973 and the long road back
Sunderland were founded in 1879 by schoolmaster James Allan. The 'Team of All Talents' became England's first great league dynasty, winning three championships in four seasons from 1891/92. Three more titles followed before the Second World War, along with the club's first FA Cup in 1937.
The club's most famous day came in 1973. Playing in the Second Division, Bob Stokoe's side beat holders Leeds 1-0 at Wembley, thanks to Ian Porterfield's goal and Jimmy Montgomery's double save, in one of the great FA Cup upsets.
Sunderland left Roker Park for the Stadium of Light in 1997 and soon recorded back-to-back seventh-place finishes in the Premier League. The 2018 relegation to League One was followed by a global documentary, and promotion in 2022 and a play-off final win in 2025 completed the climb back to the top flight.
Honours. 6 league titles · 2 FA Cups (1937, 1973) · FA Charity Shield (1936) · 5 second-tier titles · EFL Trophy (2021).
The ground. The Stadium of Light opened in 1997 on the site of the former Wearmouth Colliery, which had closed four years earlier. Its continuous bowl of 48,095 seats makes it one of England's largest club grounds. The Roker End carries the name of the old home, and away fans stay in the North Stand Upper for 2026/27.
Biggest rivalries
- Newcastle United. The Tyne-Wear derby is Sunderland's defining fixture, a north-east divide with roots that run far beyond football. Newcastle United vs Sunderland tickets →
- Middlesbrough. The Wear-Tees clash is the next biggest regional contest, and it is especially fierce when the clubs share an EFL season.
- Coventry City. An unusual rivalry that dates back to the delayed kick-off on the final day of the 1976/77 relegation battle and has resurfaced in recent promotion races. Coventry City vs Sunderland tickets →
Getting to Stadium of Light
Sunderland · 48,095 capacity · Opened 1997
Sunderland moved to the Stadium of Light in July 1997, after 99 years at Roker Park. With 48,095 seats, the figure listed in the 2026/27 Premier League Handbook, it is one of the biggest club stadiums in England. The record attendance for a football match is 48,335, set against Liverpool in April 2002.
Public transport: Stadium of Light station on the Tyne and Wear Metro is right next to the ground. St Peter's, one stop away, is a useful alternative when queues build after the final whistle.
Away fans: Visiting fans sit in the upper tier of the North Stand, with an allocation of around 3,000. The Premier League approved the club's request to keep them there for 2026/27.

Seating at Stadium of Light
Because the Stadium of Light is a continuous bowl, sightlines are good almost everywhere, and prices depend more on height and how central you are than on which stand you pick. The West Stand, named after Jimmy Montgomery, is the largest side with roughly 17,000 seats. It holds the halfway line and the TV gantry, and its central lower blocks are the most expensive seats in the ground.
The East Stand, with about 11,000 seats, faces it and usually costs less for a similar view. Behind the goals, the Roker End to the south holds around 8,000 and is named after the club's old ground, while the taller North Stand, about 13,000, houses the away allocation in its upper tier. The upper rows of the East Stand and the corners next to the Roker End are usually the cheapest way in.
