Seating

Where to sit at St James' Park

  • Gallowgate End

The traditional home end sits behind the south goal. Central lower blocks put you right next to the noise, and the south-east corner holds a large licensed standing area.

  • Milburn Stand

The main stand on the west side houses the dugouts and the premium seating. Central seats in the lower tier and at club level deliver the best conventional side-on views in the ground.

  • East Stand

The smaller touchline stand opposite the Milburn is hemmed in by listed buildings behind it. It keeps fans close to the play and feels far more intimate than the giant upper tiers elsewhere in the stadium.

  • Leazes Stand Level 7

The towering north end offers panoramic views from a serious height. Away supporters sit on Level 7, while home blocks nearby include a new safe-standing section for 2026/27.

Background

Newcastle United club history

Newcastle United are the Magpies, the sporting heartbeat of a one-club city. St James' Park looms over the centre of Newcastle, and the 2025 League Cup finally gave generations of supporters a domestic trophy to celebrate.

League Cup ends a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy

From Edwardian champions to Wembley in 2025

Newcastle United were created in 1892, when Newcastle East End took over West End and moved into St James' Park. The club became a national force before the First World War, winning three league titles in five seasons, and added a fourth championship in 1927.

Six FA Cups had followed by 1955, and Joe Harvey's side won the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Kevin Keegan's 'Entertainers' then built the defining modern team: promoted in 1993, they attacked their way to two Premier League runner-up finishes and turned St James' Park into one of the league's great stages.

Years of frustration under Mike Ashley ended with the 2021 takeover and a return to the Champions League. In March 2025, goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak beat Liverpool at Wembley to win the League Cup, Newcastle's first major domestic trophy in 70 years.

Honours. 4 league titles · 6 FA Cups · League Cup (2025) · Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (1969) · 2 FA Charity Shields.

The ground. Football has been played at St James' Park since 1880, and Newcastle United have called it home since 1892. The 52,729-seat stadium sits right above the city centre. The huge Milburn and Leazes stands give it a distinctive lopsided skyline, and the Gallowgate End is still the traditional heart of the home support.

Biggest rivalries

  • Sunderland. The Tyne-Wear derby is Newcastle's defining rivalry, splitting neighbouring cities and even families across the north-east. Newcastle United vs Sunderland tickets →
  • Middlesbrough. The Tyne-Tees derby is the next biggest regional fixture, and it carries extra bite whenever the clubs share a division.
  • Manchester United. A high-profile rivalry built on the title races of the 1990s and renewed at the 2023 League Cup final at Wembley. Manchester United vs Newcastle United tickets →
