Eighteen clubs play a double round-robin from August to May; the bottom-placed side is automatically relegated to the Eerste Divisie while two further clubs enter a multi-tie promotion-relegation play-off, a system unique among Europe's top divisions. Ajax sit on thirty-six titles, ahead of PSV Eindhoven on twenty-five and Feyenoord on sixteen — the trio commonly known as De Drie Grote (the big three) — though FC Twente, AZ Alkmaar and Sparta Rotterdam have all won the championship in past eras. The league has long served as Europe's most prolific exporter of footballing talent per head of population, with the Ajax academy at De Toekomst widely studied as the template for modern player development. Defining venues include the Johan Cruyff Arena (54,990) in Amsterdam, the Philips Stadion (35,000) in Eindhoven and Feyenoord's De Kuip (47,500) in Rotterdam. De Klassieker between Ajax and Feyenoord is the league's defining fixture.
