History

About Koning Willem II Stadion

The sports park on the Goirleseweg was laid out around 1920, and Willem II played their first home match there on 9 March 1924, beating EVV Eindhoven 6–2 in front of 6,000 people. It was rebuilt after the Second World War and reopened as the Gemeentelijk Sportpark on 15 August 1948, with a stone main stand completed in 1957 and floodlights first used on 27 November 1982. Three new stands went up from 1993, the old main stand was taken down after the last home match against Ajax on 8 May 1994, and the rebuilt stadium was opened by the mayor of Tilburg on 31 May 1995. The main building was enlarged with business rooms in 2000–01, and the word ‘Koning’ was added to the name on 30 January 2009 in honour of King William II of the Netherlands.

Every seat in the stadium is covered. The most vocal Willem II fans stand in the Kingside (sections A, B and C) and in section E, which faces the away section.

  The main stand on the west side, attached to the main building with its business rooms and restaurant.

• Kingside

  The north end, home to Willem II’s most vocal supporters in sections A, B and C; the Kingside group was formed in 1979.

• Lange zijde

  The long side opposite the main stand.

• Goirlese kant

  The end on the Goirleseweg side.
