History
About AFAS Stadion
The stadium opened in August 2006 as the DSB Stadion, replacing AZ’s former ground, the Alkmaarderhout; the opening friendly against Arsenal on 4 August 2006 ended in a 3–0 defeat. A planned expansion to 30,000 was shelved when sponsor DSB Bank went bankrupt shortly before work was due to start, and the ground was renamed AZ Stadion and later AFAS Stadion. On 10 August 2019 part of the roof over the Molenaar stand collapsed in high winds while the stadium was empty. A new straight roof designed by ZJA was built from June 2020 at a cost of €27.5 million, and the stadium reopened on 11 September 2021 against PSV.
