History

About Goffertstadion

Unemployed Nijmegen workers dug the stadium by hand during the economic crisis of the 1930s, and Prince Bernhard opened it on 8 July 1939. It was rebuilt in 1999–2000, cutting capacity from about 30,000 to 12,500, and reopened on 25 January 2000 with NEC beating Anderlecht 3–1. Part of the away section collapsed after a match against Vitesse in October 2021; the stadium was repaired and away fans returned in August 2022. NEC bought the stadium from the municipality in 2025.
