History
About Johan Cruijff ArenA
The stadium grew out of a 1986 design for Amsterdam’s failed 1992 Olympic bid; after the bid was lost, the plan was reworked without an athletics track and with a retractable roof. The first pile was driven on 26 November 1993, and Queen Beatrix opened the stadium on 14 August 1996, when Ajax lost 3–0 to AC Milan in a friendly. Ajax moved in from De Meer, which was too small for most of their matches. It was renamed the Johan Cruijff ArenA from the 2018–19 season in honour of Johan Cruijff, who died in 2016, and the facade on the east side was rebuilt between 2017 and 2020.
