History

About Stadion Woudestein

Excelsior were founded on 23 July 1902 by a group of friends from Kralingen who played on the Woudesteyn estate. The club played elsewhere from 1922 to 1939, at the Toepad sports ground, until a marine barracks was built there; Woudestein was then renovated, using a stand and dressing room moved from the Toepad, and reopened on 9 September 1939. In 1958 supporters helped build what Dutch Wikipedia describes as the first covered standing terrace in the Netherlands, and a 2,000-seat stand followed in 1973. Four new stands were built from 1997, the ground was called Stadion Stad Rotterdam Verzekeringen until 2004, and it carried the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion name from 2017 to 2025.
