History

About Abe Lenstra Stadion

sc Heerenveen played for decades at the J.H. Kruisstraat ground (Sportpark Noord) before moving to the edge of the town. Riemer van der Velde laid the first stone on 14 March 1994, and the corners were closed during construction instead of being left open as planned. The stadium opened on 20 August 1994 with a friendly against PSV, Ronaldo’s first match in Europe, with the kick-off taken by Prince Willem-Alexander. It first held about 14,500, and the Sportstad Heerenveen project from 2002 almost doubled the capacity. Later plans for 29,000 and then 32,000 places were shelved.
