Seating

Where to sit at Metropolitano

  • Lateral stands

The two long sides run along the touchlines and give the best overall view of the game. Central Lateral seats are the most sought-after and the most expensive, while seats nearer the corners cost less with only a slightly angled view.

  • Fondo Norte and Fondo Sur

The ends behind the goals hold Atlético's most vocal home support and are usually the best-value seats in the stadium. Choose a lower Fondo seat if atmosphere matters more to you than a side-on view.

  • Lower tier

The lower tier sits close to the pitch, so you feel the pace and intensity that define Simeone's teams. Front rows can be quite flat, so seats a little further back often give a better view.

  • Upper tier

The upper tier is high but steep, and the roof covers every seat in the stadium, so the view is clear and you stay dry. It is generally the most affordable part of the ground.

Atlético Madrid club history

Atlético Madrid are the capital's rebels: the working-class alternative to Real Madrid, famous for passion, resilience and a remarkable revival under Diego Simeone.

Move to the Metropolitano

From the Calderón to the Simeone era

Atlético were founded in 1903 by Basque students living in Madrid as a branch of Athletic Club, which is why the two clubs share their red-and-white stripes. They won their first league titles in 1940 and 1941 and spent half a century at the Vicente Calderón on the banks of the Manzanares, where they celebrated the 1996 league and cup double.

The club reached the European Cup final in 1974 and won the Intercontinental Cup the same year. Diego Simeone, appointed in December 2011, then transformed Atlético, with Europa League wins in 2012 and 2018, La Liga titles in 2014 and 2021, and Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016.

In 2017 Atlético left the Calderón for the Metropolitano in the east of the city, a modern stadium that hosted the 2019 Champions League final and has become one of the loudest venues in La Liga.

Honours. 11 La Liga titles · 10 Copa del Rey titles · 3 Europa League titles (2010, 2012, 2018) · Cup Winners' Cup (1962) · Intercontinental Cup (1974) · 3 UEFA Super Cups.

The ground. The Metropolitano opened in 2017 in the San Blas-Canillejas district of eastern Madrid. It holds around 70,000 fans under a roof that covers every seat, and its steep bowl keeps the noise in.

Biggest rivalries

  • Real Madrid. The Madrid derby is Atlético's defining fixture, a city rivalry made far more competitive since Simeone's arrival. Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid tickets →
  • Athletic Club. A rivalry with shared roots: Atlético began life as Athletic's Madrid branch, and meetings carry a special respect and edge.
  • Rayo Vallecano. A smaller Madrid derby against the working-class club from Vallecas, often lively in the stands. Atlético Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano tickets →

Getting to Metropolitano

Madrid · 70,460 capacity · Opened 2017

The Metropolitano has been Atlético Madrid's home since September 2017, when the club moved from the Vicente Calderón. Located in the San Blas-Canillejas district in the east of Madrid, it is one of Spain's most modern stadiums and hosted the 2019 Champions League final.

Public transport: Estadio Metropolitano station on Metro Line 7 is right beside the ground. Las Rosas on Line 2 is about 15 minutes' walk away and is often quieter after the final whistle.

Away fans: Visiting supporters are placed in a separated section of the upper tier, and the exact block is confirmed with each allocation.
