History

About Estadio Municipal de Riazor

Riazor opened in October 1944 beside Riazor beach, with an initial capacity of 37,000, and Deportivo lost the first match 3–2 to Valencia. It staged the 1947 Spanish Cup final and three group matches at the 1982 World Cup. A major enlargement between 1995 and 1998 reopened the ground on 12 August 1998 with about 32,000 seats, and further work from 2015 to 2018 included replacing the whole roof. Since 2017 it has carried the sponsored name Abanca-Riazor.
