History

About Campos de Sport de El Sardinero

The current ground replaced the original El Sardinero of 1913, which closed on 15 May 1988 with Racing 0–0 Granada and was demolished soon after; a plaque in the Parque de Mesones marks its site. The new stadium was inaugurated on 20 August 1988 with a friendly in which Real Oviedo beat Racing 2–0. Standing areas were later removed, and in 2008 the floodlights, accessibility, players’ tunnel and press room were upgraded to meet UEFA rules. Extra seats were added to the back row of every stand in January 2025.
