• It is the finishing point of the San Silvestre Vallecana race every 31 December.
• River Plate, whose colours inspired Rayo’s, played here in the 1978 Villa de Madrid tournament.
• Queen played here on 3 August 1986; Bob Dylan (1980) and Metallica (1992) also performed at the ground.
• Madrid’s chess, table tennis, boxing and billiards federations are based in the stadium.
• Rayo hosted the first leg of their first Copa del Rey semi-final here in 2021–22, losing 2–1 to Real Betis.

History

About Estadio de Vallecas

The stadium opened in June 1976 on the site of an older ground, and Rayo lost its first match 1–0 to Real Valladolid. It held 20,000 at first, 12,000 seated; all-seating cut that to 15,500 in 1996, and removing the front two side rows in 2011 left 14,708. It was named after club president Teresa Rivero from 1999 to 2011, when a fans’ referendum chose Estadio de Vallecas. In July 2026 the Community of Madrid suspended Rayo’s use of the ground after an audit, and the club played early 2026–27 home games at Butarque in Leganés before returning to Vallecas for the Athletic Club match on 10 October 2026.

The ground has stands on three sides only: the north end has no stand, just a wall with club advertising, because flats stand directly behind it. Rayo’s ultras, the Bukaneros, gather in the opposite end.
