Designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, the ground is a landmark of pre-war modernist sports architecture — the cantilevered concrete roof over the Maratona stand and the helical access staircases at the corners are protected as historic monuments. Capacity sits at around 43,000 and the stadium has hosted matches at the 1934 and 1990 FIFA World Cups.
