About Stadio Diego Armando Maradona
The stadium opened on 6 December 1959 with a 2–1 Napoli win over Juventus. It was the Stadio del Sole until 1963 and then the Stadio San Paolo. It was rebuilt and roofed for the 1990 World Cup, where it staged five matches including the Italy–Argentina semi-final, and refurbished in 2018–19 for the Summer Universiade, whose opening ceremony it hosted. Naples city council renamed it after Diego Maradona on 4 December 2020, nine days after his death.
