Naples — capital of Campania, with a city population around 920,000 and a metropolitan area of more than three million — is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the cultural capital of southern Italy. SSC Napoli, founded in 1926, play at the 54,726-capacity Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in the Fuorigrotta district west of the centre, the ground renamed in December 2020 days after Maradona's death. Beyond football, Naples hosts the annual Maggio dei Monumenti heritage festival across May, the Pizzafest in September (the city is the birthplace of Neapolitan pizza, recognised by UNESCO in 2017), and a year-round programme of opera at the Teatro di San Carlo — Europe's oldest continuously operating opera house, founded in 1737. The Mostra d'Oltremare exhibition complex in Fuorigrotta hosts large-scale concerts and trade fairs.
