Bologna — capital of Emilia-Romagna, with around 390,000 residents in the city proper and roughly a million across the metropolitan area — is one of Europe's oldest university cities, home to the Università di Bologna founded in 1088, and hosts the country's busiest road and rail interchange between northern and central Italy. Bologna FC, founded in 1909, play at the 38,279-capacity Stadio Renato Dall'Ara in the Costa-Saragozza district at the foot of the Colle della Guardia, a ground opened in 1927 and recognised by its distinctive Torre di Maratona and the surrounding pre-war architecture. The Rossoblù are seven-time Italian champions, all in the pre-war and immediate post-war eras, and were among the co-founders of the modern Serie A pyramid in 1929; the club's qualification for the 2024–25 Champions League under Thiago Motta returned Bologna to the European top tier for the first time in more than half a century. Beyond football, the Unipol Arena (16,500) in nearby Casalecchio di Reno hosts most of the city's largest concert tours, and the Bologna Children's Book Fair every spring is the world's leading event for the genre. The historic centre's medieval porticoes are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city's reputation for food, the oldest university in the Western world (founded 1088), and a dense medieval centre of arched porticoes are all recognised by UNESCO designation.

Bologna play at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara in the western Saragozza district — capacity 36,462, opened in 1927 and one of the oldest continuously-operating top-flight stadiums in Italy. The ground is reached by bus 14 from Bologna Centrale or by a 25-minute walk along Via Saragozza past the medieval Porta. The stadium has been earmarked for major redevelopment with extended Curve and improved seating planned for the late 2020s.

Bologna's matchday culture is built around the Curva Andrea Costa (the home end, named for the early-20th-century socialist politician) and the rossoblù red-and-blue colours. The Derby dell'Appennino against Fiorentina — separated by 100 kilometres of the Apennine mountains — is the most fiercely contested local fixture, alongside the Derby dell'Emilia against Parma and the regional fixture against Modena. Bologna's 2024 Champions League qualification under coach Thiago Motta — finishing fifth in Serie A — was the club's biggest sporting achievement in two generations.

Bologna also hosts the Unipol Arena (capacity 10,000) in nearby Casalecchio for arena concerts, the annual Bologna Children's Book Fair every April (the world's leading trade fair for children's publishing), and Cinema Ritrovato — the international classic film festival — every late-June at Piazza Maggiore in the city centre. The Motor Show Bologna and the SAIE construction trade fair run at the Bologna Fiere exhibition complex on the northern edge of the city.
