History

About The Valley

Charlton moved to The Valley in 1919, to a disused sand and chalk pit in which volunteer supporters dug out the pitch and used the spoil to bank up the terraces. The record crowd of 75,031 came for an FA Cup tie with Aston Villa in February 1938. The club left in 1985, sharing Selhurst Park with Crystal Palace and then Upton Park with West Ham United, and returned on 5 December 1992 with a 1–0 win over Portsmouth after supporters had formed a political party to campaign for it. Capacity was 8,337 on the return; the East Stand followed in 1994, the two-tier West Stand later in the decade, and the rebuilt Covered End in 2002 took it to 27,111.
