Budapest — Hungary's capital with around 1.7 million residents on either side of the Danube, joined in 1873 from the historic settlements of Buda, Pest and Óbuda — anchors the country's football culture and a wider live-events calendar that draws several million visitors a year. Ferencváros (founded 1899) play at the 22,000-capacity Groupama Aréna in the Üllői út area, while Újpest (founded 1885) play at Szusza Ferenc Stadion on the Pest side; the two clubs share more than fifty Hungarian league titles between them and contest a derby that traces back to the start of the twentieth century. The 67,200-capacity Puskás Aréna, opened in 2019 on the footprint of the old Népstadion, hosts the Hungary national team and has staged UEFA Champions League and Europa League finals plus group-stage and round-of-sixteen fixtures during Euro 2020. Beyond football, the MVM Dome (20,000) hosts the city's biggest indoor concerts and handball internationals, while the Sziget Festival each August on Óbuda Island is one of Europe's largest music festivals at half a million attendees over a week. Metro line M2 reaches Puskás Ferenc Stadion station directly.

Budapest — the capital of Hungary with a population of around 1.7 million — is the historical home of Hungarian football, a sport in which Hungary's national team made the 1938 and 1954 World Cup finals and were FIFA's top-ranked side for much of the 1950s. The current era is dominated by Ferencvárosi TC (Fradi, founded 1899), Hungary's most-successful club with a record number of Nemzeti Bajnokság I titles and regular UEFA Europa League and Champions League group-stage appearances.

Ferencváros play at the Groupama Aréna in the Ferencváros (9th) district — capacity 22,000, opened in 2014 and the first Hungarian stadium to qualify for UEFA category-four status. The ground is reached by tram 24 from Boráros tér or by metro line M3 to Népliget. The Hungarian national team play at the Puskás Aréna in the Stefánia district — a 67,215-capacity bowl opened in 2019 on the site of the old Népstadion, named for Ferenc Puskás and one of UEFA's category-four venues. Puskás Aréna hosted four Euro 2020 fixtures (held in 2021) and the 2023 UEFA Europa League final.

The Budapest derby — Ferencváros versus Újpest FC (founded 1885, the second-most decorated Hungarian club) — is one of the oldest continually contested derbies in continental Europe, dating to the early 1900s. Ferencváros's Group B (the green-and-white ultras) and the Újpest Brigade are the two long-established Hungarian ultras movements. Beyond domestic football, Puskás Aréna has hosted regular UEFA Champions League / Europa League knockout fixtures during pandemic-era venue reallocations and remains a regular European host city.

Budapest also hosts the Hungarian Grand Prix every July-August at the Hungaroring just outside the city, the Sziget Festival in mid-August on Óbudai-sziget island (one of Europe's largest week-long music festivals with around half a million attendees), and the World Athletics Championships were hosted at the National Athletics Centre in 2023.
