Zurich — Switzerland's largest city at around 440,000 residents in the canton and 1.4 million across the metropolitan area — sits at the north-western tip of Lake Zurich and ranks as the country's commercial and cultural capital. Two of the oldest top-flight clubs in world football share the city: Grasshopper Club Zürich (founded 1886) and FC Zürich (founded 1896), both playing at the 26,500-capacity Letzigrund stadium pending the long-planned reconstruction of the historic Hardturm. The Zürcher Derby has been contested since 1896 — one of the longest unbroken city derbies in football. Beyond football, the Hallenstadion (15,000) hosts the bulk of Switzerland's indoor concert tours and the annual Davidoff Swiss Indoors tennis event takes place in nearby Basel each October. The Zurich Film Festival each autumn and the Street Parade techno march in August are the city's biggest annual cultural events. Zurich's S-Bahn network and the SBB intercity links from Hauptbahnhof reach the Letzigrund in around ten minutes; Zurich Airport sits a fifteen-minute train ride north of the centre.

Zürich — Switzerland's largest city with a population of around 440,000 in the commune — is home to two top-flight clubs: FC Zürich (founded 1896, the older club) and Grasshopper Club Zürich (founded 1886, the most decorated club in Swiss football history). Both share the Letzigrund stadium in the Albisrieden district, making Zürich one of the few European capitals where the city derby is played in the same ground for both halves of the season.

The Letzigrund — capacity 26,104, rebuilt in 2007 — hosts both clubs alongside the annual Weltklasse Zürich Diamond League athletics meeting, one of the highlight events of the global track and field calendar. The stadium is reached by tram 2 or 3 from Zürich Hauptbahnhof, journey time around 15 minutes. Construction is currently underway on the Hardturm site for a new dedicated football stadium for Grasshopper, with completion expected in the late 2020s.

Der Zürcher Derby between FC Zürich and Grasshopper is one of the oldest derbies in continental Europe, first played in the 1890s, and is contested across multiple league meetings every season since both clubs play in the Swiss Super League. Grasshopper hold the record for most Swiss championship titles (27); FC Zürich are second (13). The smaller, more political Südkurve of FC Zürich and the historically more middle-class Grasshopper supporter base reflect the older social split of the city.

Zürich also hosts the Hallenstadion — a 13,000-capacity indoor arena in the Oerlikon district — which runs a year-round programme of arena tours and is the home of the ZSC Lions ice hockey club. The Street Parade in early August is Europe's largest electronic music festival and one of the most-attended single-day events in Switzerland. The Zürich Film Festival in late September-early October has grown into one of the major European festivals on the autumn calendar.
