Porto — Portugal's second-largest city at around 230,000 residents in the city proper and 1.7 million across the metropolitan area — straddles the Douro River where it meets the Atlantic, with a UNESCO-listed historic centre and a centuries-long association with the port wine trade. FC Porto, founded in 1893, play at the 50,033-capacity Estádio do Dragão which opened for Euro 2004 in the Antas district to the east of the centre. The Dragões have won more than thirty Primeira Liga titles, the European Cup / Champions League in 1987 and 2004, and the UEFA Cup / Europa League in 2003 and 2011 — placing the club in the small group of European sides to have lifted at least four UEFA trophies. Cross-city rivals Boavista FC play at the 28,263-capacity Estádio do Bessa Século XXI. Beyond football, the Super Bock Arena – Pavilhão Rosa Mota (8,000) and Casa da Música handle the city's indoor concert calendar, and the Primavera Sound Porto festival takes place each June at Parque da Cidade. Metro do Porto Line A reaches the Estádio do Dragão directly from the central São Bento and Trindade stations.

Porto are one of the Big Three of Portuguese football alongside Benfica and Sporting CP.

FC Porto play at the Estádio do Dragão — capacity 50,033, opened in 2003 to replace the old Estádio das Antas and one of the venues for Euro 2004 and the 2021 Champions League final (the Manchester City vs Chelsea final, relocated from Istanbul). The ground is reached by Porto Metro line A, B, E or F to Estádio do Dragão station, immediately adjacent to the turnstiles. The dragon mascot is a reference to the club's coat of arms, dating to a charter from the 14th century.

O Clássico against Benfica is the season's defining fixture and one of the most televised matches in Portuguese sport, contested for both league titles and the Taça de Portugal. The Derby do Porto against local rivals Boavista is the smaller, more local fixture, contested when both clubs share a division. Porto's matchday culture — the Super Dragões ultras in the south stand, the Champions League nights at the Dragão against Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Liverpool over the past two decades — has built one of European football's most consistent home records.

Porto also hosts the smaller Estádio do Bessa for Boavista, the Super Bock Arena (formerly the Pavilhão Rosa Mota) in the Palácio de Cristal gardens for arena concerts, and the annual NOS Primavera Sound festival every June at Parque da Cidade — the Portuguese sister edition of the Barcelona Primavera. The Festas de São João on the night of 23 June is one of Europe's largest single-night street festivals, drawing hundreds of thousands across the Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront.
