Newcastle upon Tyne — the largest city in north-east England with around 300,000 residents and a 1.6 million metropolitan footprint stretching across Tyneside — sits on the north bank of the River Tyne and takes its football identity almost entirely from Newcastle United. The 52,305-capacity St James' Park has stood on roughly the same site since the 1880s and is one of only a handful of top-flight English grounds inside the city centre, dominating the skyline above the Gallowgate End. Tyne and Wear Metro stops at Monument and St James sit within two minutes' walk, and Newcastle Central station is around fifteen. The ground hosted matches at Euro 96, the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2012 London Olympics football tournament, alongside Premier League and Champions League fixtures. Beyond football, the Utilita Arena (11,000) on the Quayside hosts the city's biggest concert tours, while the Sage Gateshead across the river handles classical and chamber programming.
