Sunderland — a city of around 170,000 on the north-east coast of England where the Wear meets the North Sea — has staged organised football since 1879 when the schoolteacher James Allan founded the local club. Sunderland AFC's 49,000-capacity Stadium of Light opened in 1997 on the site of the old Monkwearmouth Colliery, named in tribute to the coal-mining heritage that powered the surrounding district for more than a century; the miner's lamp at the entrance is lit on every matchday. The Black Cats are six-time English champions, all in the pre-Premier League era, and won the FA Cup as a Second Division side in 1973 — one of the most famous upsets in English football. The 2025 promotion via the Championship play-off final returned Sunderland to the Premier League after a long climb back from League One. The Tyne and Wear Metro reaches Stadium of Light station — directly outside the ground — in around fifteen minutes from Newcastle and seven from Sunderland city centre. Beyond football, the Stadium of Light regularly hosts headline summer concert tours and the city's Roker Park hosts the annual Sunderland air show.

Sunderland — the north-east English city with a population of around 170,000 in the city and 280,000 across the wider built-up area — is home to Sunderland AFC, founded in 1879 and one of the most-decorated clubs in English football history with six First Division titles (the last in 1936) and two FA Cup wins. After a difficult spell in League One from 2018 to 2022, the club returned to the Championship and back into Premier League contention.

Sunderland play at the Stadium of Light — capacity 49,000, the largest football stadium in north-east England outside St James' Park and the eighth-largest football ground in England. Opened in 1997 on the site of the former Wearmouth Colliery on the north bank of the River Wear, the ground is reached by Tyne and Wear Metro Stadium of Light station (immediately adjacent to the turnstiles, eight minutes from Sunderland city centre). A miner's lamp at the entrance commemorates the colliery and the working-class identity of the club.

The Tyne–Wear derby against Newcastle United — separated by 12 miles of A19 — is one of the most fiercely contested fixtures in English football, with police-led travel restrictions on derby days. The two clubs have not met in a competitive league fixture since the 2015/16 Premier League season but resume whenever both share a division. Sunderland's Roker Roar — the noise from the Roker End stand — and the pre-match playing of the Dance of the Knights from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet are among the most distinctive matchday traditions in the English game.

The Stadium of Light hosts a small number of summer concerts each year alongside the football calendar — Beyoncé, Rihanna, Bruce Springsteen, BTS and Take That have all played the venue. The Sunderland International Airshow in late July is one of the largest free annual airshows in Europe with around one million attendees across the seafront weekend.
