Edinburgh — Scotland's capital with around 530,000 residents, built on a series of volcanic ridges between the Firth of Forth and the Pentland Hills — sustains a year-round events calendar that few European cities can match. Two Scottish Premiership clubs split the city: Heart of Midlothian (founded 1874) play at Tynecastle Park (capacity around 19,800) in the Gorgie district to the west, while Hibernian (founded 1875) play at Easter Road (around 20,400) in the Leith district to the north-east. The Edinburgh Derby is one of the oldest in world football and contested up to four times per league season. The 67,144-capacity Murrayfield Stadium in the western suburbs hosts Scotland's rugby internationals — including Six Nations, Autumn Nations Series and the British and Irish Lions — plus headline summer concerts. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe each August is the largest performing-arts event on earth, drawing more than three million ticketed admissions across hundreds of venues, with the Edinburgh International, Book and Film festivals running alongside. The city's compact centre is served by Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket stations, with the tram line running directly from Edinburgh Airport to Princes Street.

Hearts play at Tynecastle Park in the Gorgie district — capacity 19,852, one of the smaller top-flight grounds but one of the loudest because of its tight, four-stand layout right against the pitch. Hibs play at Easter Road in the Leith Walk district — capacity 20,421, with the famous Famous Five Stand named for the legendary 1950s forward line. Both grounds are walkable from central Edinburgh; Tynecastle is around 25 minutes west, Easter Road is 20 minutes north-east.

Beyond football, Edinburgh hosts Scotland's national rugby team at Murrayfield Stadium in the western suburbs — capacity 67,144, the largest stadium in Scotland and home to all Scotland Six Nations and autumn international fixtures. Edinburgh is also Scotland's festival capital: the Edinburgh Fringe (the world's largest arts festival, every August across more than 300 venues), the Edinburgh International Festival, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at the Castle Esplanade, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival all run across the August festival month.

Hogmanay — the city-wide New Year celebration with the Princes Street Gardens concert and the Royal Mile street party — is one of the largest organised New Year events in the world, regularly drawing 75,000 ticketed attendees across the three-day programme. The Six Nations weekends at Murrayfield (February-March) and the August festival month are the two biggest visitor windows on the Edinburgh calendar.
