History

About Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium

The site was first built in 1895 as the Neo Phaliron Velodrome for the 1896 Athens Olympics, where Paul Masson won three track cycling golds. Rebuilt as a football ground and renovated in 1964, it hosted the 1971 Cup Winners’ Cup final between Real Madrid and Chelsea, Greece’s first European final. On 8 February 1981, 21 Olympiacos supporters died at Gate 7 after a match against AEK Athens. The old stadium was demolished in May 2003 and a new football ground, facing a different direction, was built in about 14 months for the 2004 Olympic football tournament.
