About
Football in Munich
Munich is the headquarters of Bayern Munich. The most-decorated German football club and one of the most influential in European football history. Bayern's Allianz Arena (75,024 capacity) opened in 2005 and is universally recognised by its translucent ETFE-foil exterior, designed to glow Bayern red, German national white, or Champions League blue depending on the fixture. Architects Herzog & de Meuron's design has been one of the most visually distinctive 21st-century sports buildings. Bayern have won the Bundesliga every year since 2013 — 11 consecutive titles, a German record. Munich's other senior club is TSV 1860 Munich, currently in the third tier (3. Liga) and playing at the Grünwalder Stadion. 1860 share the Allianz Arena's heritage. They were the original co-tenant of Bayern from 2005 until financial troubles forced them out in 2017.

Munich Derby
Bayern Munich vs TSV 1860. Historically one of Germany's most-played derbies. Currently rare due to 1860's lower-division status, but still contested when both clubs meet in cup competitions.
Match-day tips
On a Munich match-day
Bundesliga kick-offs are 15:30 (Saturday afternoon), 18:30 (Saturday evening) or 17:30 (Sunday). Munich's most atmospheric fixtures are the Friday night Bundesliga and Tuesday/Wednesday Champions League dates. The Allianz Arena's red glow is most striking in winter floodlit conditions. Bring photo ID — German football grounds enforce ID-matching at the gate. Bag policy is small backpacks or smaller. Concessions are cashless and German-style: bratwurst, pretzels and beer dominate. Allow 30-45 minutes for the U6 queue post-match.
When to visit
Munich football season
Bundesliga runs August through May with a 4-week winter break (mid-December through mid-January). October-March offers the most atmospheric matchday weather; the Allianz Arena's exterior lighting is most striking in the winter darkness. Oktoberfest (late September / early October) overlaps with early-season Bundesliga fixtures. Plan accommodation 2+ months in advance for that window.
