Football in Brussels

Brussels — capital of Belgium and the de facto seat of the European Union, with around 1.2 million residents across its nineteen communes — supports two Jupiler Pro League clubs whose styles and pedigree could not be further apart. RSC Anderlecht (founded 1908) play at the 21,500-capacity Lotto Park (the Stade Constant Vanden Stock) in the western Anderlecht commune and are Belgium's most decorated club, with around thirty-four league titles plus the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1976 and 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1983. Union Saint-Gilloise (founded 1897), the most successful Belgian side of the inter-war era, returned to the top flight in 2021 after almost half a century away and now play in Europe regularly from the historic Stade Joseph Marien (around 9,400 capacity) in the Forest commune. The 50,093-capacity King Baudouin Stadium in the Heysel district hosts Belgium national-team fixtures, the King's Cup final and the long-running Memorial Van Damme athletics meet on the Diamond League circuit. Beyond football, the Forest National (8,000) handles the city's biggest indoor concert tours and the annual Brussels Jazz Weekend in May spans hundreds of free open-air sets across the centre.

Anderlecht play at the Lotto Park (formerly Stade Constant Vanden Stock) in the Anderlecht district — capacity 21,500, with a Brussels-area replacement venue under long-term planning at the Heysel site. The ground is reached by metro line 5 to Saint-Guidon. Union Saint-Gilloise play at the Stade Joseph Marien in the Forest district — capacity 8,000, one of the most picturesque grounds in European football, set inside the Parc Duden woodland. Major Champions League / Europa League fixtures for Union are temporarily relocated to the Lotto Park or the Stade Roi Baudouin (capacity 50,093, the historical Heysel) due to UEFA capacity requirements.

The Brussels derby — RSC Anderlecht versus Union Saint-Gilloise — was a historic fixture for most of the 20th century, contested annually until Union's 1973 relegation, and was revived in 2021 when Union returned to the top flight. Belgium's national team play their home fixtures at the Stade Roi Baudouin (the Heysel Stadium, rebuilt in 1995 on the site of the 1985 Heysel disaster). The annual Memorial Van Damme athletics meeting at the Roi Baudouin is one of the highlight events of the Diamond League calendar each September.

Brussels also hosts the Forest National (Vorst Nationaal) arena (capacity 8,000) in the same Forest district as Union, plus the Palais 12 (capacity 15,000) at the Heysel exhibition complex for arena tours. The annual Tomorrowland (the world's largest electronic music festival) takes place in nearby Boom in late July; the Brussels Jazz Marathon in May, the Ommegang historical pageant in early July at the Grand-Place, and the Brussels Christmas Market in December round out the major event calendar.
