History
About Stade Joseph Marien
Union Saint-Gilloise leased the ground at the edge of Duden Park in 1914, began work in 1915 and opened what was then called the Stade de la Butte on 14 September 1919 with a gala match against AC Milan. The stadium hosted three matches of the 1920 Olympic football tournament. In 1926 the main stand was rebuilt to a design by Albert Callewaert with an Art Deco façade, and capacity reached 35,000. The ground was named after club president Joseph Marien, who died in 1933. After Union’s decline the end stands were closed and capacity was cut to 5,500. Following a renovation funded mainly by the Brussels Region, during which Union played two seasons at the King Baudouin Stadium, the club returned in August 2018.
Seating layout
Stade Joseph Marien seating plan & capacity
The stands form a bowl against the slopes of Duden Park and, apart from the main stand, are uncovered; the protected status of the park rules out a roof. The long east side is a standing terrace.
Main Stand
Built in 1926 along the Chaussée de Bruxelles behind a 101-metre Art Deco façade with seven reliefs by Oscar De Clerck; it has been a listed monument since 2010.
East Stand
The long stand opposite the main stand, set against the slope of Duden Park, with standing places.
End stands
Semicircular seated stands behind the goals, rebuilt in the 2016–2018 renovation.
