Football in Monaco

Monaco — the second-smallest sovereign state in the world at just over two square kilometres, with around 39,000 residents on the French Riviera between Nice and the Italian border — is the only territory outside France whose principal football club competes in the Ligue 1 system. AS Monaco, founded in 1924, play at the 18,523-capacity Stade Louis II in the reclaimed Fontvieille district, a unique venue built on top of an underground car park and partly cantilevered above the Mediterranean. The club have won eight Ligue 1 titles, most recently in 2016–17 under Leonardo Jardim with a generation including Mbappé, Bernardo Silva and Fabinho. Monaco hosted the UEFA Super Cup at Stade Louis II from 1998 to 2012 and continues to host the annual Herculis athletics meet on the Diamond League circuit. Beyond football, Monaco's calendar runs on the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix in late May — laps held on a street circuit through Monte Carlo and Sainte-Dévote that has hosted the championship continuously since 1955 — plus the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters tennis tournament every April. Monaco-Monte-Carlo station sits on the Marseille–Ventimiglia main line.

AS Monaco play in France's Ligue 1 (under a special arrangement with the French federation), and the principality also hosts the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix and the Monte-Carlo Masters tennis tournament — three of the most prestigious events on their respective global calendars.

AS Monaco — founded 1924, eight-time Ligue 1 champions including the 2016/17 title — play at the Stade Louis II in the Fontvieille district, capacity just 16,360. The compact bowl is one of the smallest top-flight venues in elite European football and is reached by a 15-minute walk from Monte Carlo or by the local 1, 2, 5, 6 bus lines. The ground is built on reclaimed land and famous for the parking deck on the lower three storeys directly underneath the pitch.

The Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix — held every year in late May since 1929 — runs on the street circuit from the harbour at Port Hercule, up the hill past the Casino de Monte-Carlo, through the Fairmont hairpin and the tunnel back down to the swimming pool chicane. It is the most prestigious single race on the F1 calendar and the historical centrepiece of the motor-racing Triple Crown. The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters tennis tournament every April at the Monte Carlo Country Club is one of the nine ATP 1000 tournaments and one of the most picturesque tennis venues in the world.

Monaco also hosts the Monaco Yacht Show in late September (the world's leading superyacht trade show), the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in June, and the Historic Monaco Grand Prix in even years between F1 weekends. The principality is one of the most expensive ticket markets in world sport — Grand Prix grandstand seats and Monte-Carlo Masters main court tickets routinely command premium pricing relative to comparable events.
