Hamburg — Germany's second-largest city with 1.9 million residents and the country's principal port — splits its football identity across two clubs whose stories sit at opposite ends of the league pyramid. Hamburger SV (founded 1887) play at the 57,000-capacity Volksparkstadion in the Bahrenfeld district, and held the longest unbroken Bundesliga membership in the league's history — fifty-five seasons from the 1963 inaugural campaign to relegation in 2018. The club's six German titles and 1983 European Cup win against Juventus underwrite a fan base that still fills the Volksparkstadion across long stretches of the second division. FC St. Pauli, the cult left-leaning club from the Reeperbahn district, play at the 29,546-capacity Millerntor-Stadion and returned to the Bundesliga in 2024. The Hamburg Derby is among the most charged in Germany. Beyond football, the Barclays Arena (16,000) hosts indoor concert tours, the Elbphilharmonie covers the classical calendar, and the Hamburg Marathon and Hafengeburtstag harbour festival each draw vast crowds. The ground is reached by S-Bahn S3 or S21 to Stellingen, then a 15-minute walk or matchday shuttle. FC St Pauli play at the Millerntor-Stadion in the Reeperbahn district — capacity 29,546, one of the smallest grounds in the German top flight when St Pauli are in the Bundesliga, and immediately adjacent to St Pauli U-Bahn station on the U3 line.

The Hamburger Stadtderby between HSV and St Pauli — when both clubs share a division — is one of Germany's most identity-laden derbies: HSV's traditional, family-club, suburban support against St Pauli's anarcho-punk, anti-fascist, skull-and-crossbones supporter culture. St Pauli's adoption of the Jolly Roger flag in the 1980s and their explicit anti-racism, anti-homophobia stadium policy made the club a global cult brand long before they had recent Bundesliga success. HSV's six German championships and 1983 European Cup remain the local football reference points.

Hamburg also hosts the Barclays Arena (formerly Barclaycard Arena, capacity 16,000) for arena tours, the annual Hamburg Marathon in late April, the Schlagermove festival in July, and the Reeperbahn Festival in late September — one of Europe's largest club-music festivals, with venues across the entire St Pauli quarter. The Hamburg Cruise Days in September and the Hafengeburtstag (Port Anniversary) in early May are the city's two biggest annual harbour events.
