Dortmund — the eighth-largest city in Germany at around 590,000 residents, in the heart of the Ruhr industrial belt — has built its modern identity almost entirely around Borussia Dortmund and the cathedral of football the club calls home. Signal Iduna Park (81,365 capacity — the largest stadium in Germany) opened as the Westfalenstadion for the 1974 World Cup and is renowned worldwide for the Südtribüne, a 25,000-capacity standing-only terrace nicknamed Die Gelbe Wand (the Yellow Wall), the largest free-standing terrace in European football. The ground hosted matches at the 2006 World Cup, the 2024 European Championship — including the semi-final — and the 2001 UEFA Cup final. Borussia Dortmund have won eight Bundesliga titles, the 1997 Champions League and a string of DFB-Pokal trophies. Beyond football, the Westfalenhallen complex stages concert tours and the annual Dortmund Christmas Market, with its 45-metre Christmas tree, is among the largest in Germany. BVB play at Signal Iduna Park (still widely called the Westfalenstadion by supporters) — capacity 81,365, the largest football stadium in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. The Südtribüne (South Stand) — a single-tier standing terrace holding 24,454 supporters, known as Die Gelbe Wand (the Yellow Wall) — is the largest standing terrace in European football and the defining image of every Dortmund home match. The stadium is reached by U45 or U46 tram from Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, journey time around 10 minutes, or by S-Bahn S4 to Signal Iduna Park station.

Der Klassiker — Dortmund's twice-a-season clash against Bayern Munich — is the marquee fixture of every German football season. The Revierderby against FC Schalke 04 (when Schalke are in the top flight) is the most fiercely contested local derby in Germany, separated by just 30 kilometres of Ruhr railway. Champions League nights at the Westfalenstadion — particularly the legendary 4-3 quarter-final win over Málaga in 2013 and the 4-1 over Atlético Madrid in 2024 — are among the most televised fixtures in European football.

Dortmund hosted six matches at Euro 2024 including a semi-final, and the city centre was rebuilt around the Friedensplatz fan zone for the tournament. The Westfalenhalle — a 16,000-capacity arena adjacent to the football stadium — runs a year-round programme of arena tours, ice hockey and the annual Six Days of Dortmund cycling event. Christmas markets (late November to late December) on the Hansaplatz feature the world's largest Christmas tree at 45 metres.
