History
About Red Bull Arena Salzburg
The stadium opened on 8 March 2003 as Stadion Wals-Siezenheim, just outside the Salzburg city boundary next to the West Autobahn, replacing the cramped Lehen stadium. It held 18,250 at first, and the first match was SV Austria Salzburg 1–1 FC Kärnten. Red Bull took over the club in 2005. Between May 2006 and July 2007 an upper tier was added for Euro 2008; the stadium reopened with a 1–0 friendly win over Arsenal on 25 July 2007 and staged Greece’s three group matches at the tournament. The upper tier was kept after a permanent permit in February 2009, and the original artificial pitch was replaced by grass in 2010.
