History

About bet365 Stadium

Stoke City decided in 1994 to leave the Victoria Ground, and the new stadium was built on the site of the former Stafford No. 2 Colliery for about £14.7 million. Sir Stanley Matthews opened it in August 1997 as the Britannia Stadium; the first competitive match was a 1–1 League Cup draw with Rochdale on 27 August 1997. After Matthews died in 2000 his ashes were buried beneath the centre circle. A south-east corner section took capacity above 30,000 in 2017, and the ground was renamed the bet365 Stadium on 1 June 2016.
