History
About Athens Olympic Stadium “Spyros Louis”
The stadium was opened on 8 September 1982 by President Konstantinos Karamanlis, as the main venue of the 1982 European Athletics Championships. It staged the 1983 European Cup final, the 1987 Cup Winners’ Cup final and the Champions League finals of 1994 and 2007. It was renovated between 2002 and 2004 for the Athens Olympics, when Santiago Calatrava’s steel roof was added, and it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, athletics and the men’s football final. It was closed on safety grounds in October 2023 after roof inspections and reopened in May 2024, and a wider renovation of the OAKA complex is funded through the EU’s Greece 2.0 programme.
