History

About Allianz Stadion

The Allianz Stadion was built on the site of Rapid’s previous ground, the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium, which staged its farewell match against Celtic on 6 July 2014; Rapid played at the Ernst Happel Stadium in the meantime. Construction by Strabag began on 1 December 2014 and took about 17 months, at a cost of about €53 million, of which almost €20 million came from the City of Vienna. The stadium opened on 16 July 2016 with a 2–0 win over Chelsea, and the first competitive match, a 5–0 Bundesliga win over SV Ried, followed on 23 July 2016. It was turned 90 degrees compared with the old ground, and one of the Hanappi floodlight masts was kept as a reminder.
