What "TBD" and "TBA" mean in football
TBD — "to be determined" — and TBA — "to be announced" — are used interchangeably across European football media to label fixtures where one or more details have not yet been confirmed. The most common case is the opposition: a cup-knockout round is in the calendar but the opponent is still in an earlier round, or a UEFA play-off slot is reserved but the seeding depends on group-stage results still being played out. A fixture can also be marked TBD when the kick-off time has not yet been selected by the broadcaster — the date is fixed, the slot inside the day is not.
Weather-postponed fixtures sit in TBD limbo from the moment the original date is abandoned until the league or competition organiser publishes the rescheduled date. For the Premier League and the EFL, the rescheduling window is typically seven to fourteen days; UEFA reschedules within the same competition week where possible. The ticket itself remains valid for the new date unless the buyer asks for a refund.
International friendlies — particularly the two FIFA international windows in each calendar year — produce a steady stream of TBD opponents because the federations involved often confirm the venue and date several months before naming the opposing national team. Qualification play-offs for FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, and confederation-level tournaments are also high-volume TBD generators.
Where the TBDs come from
Competitions with the most TBD fixtures
- 01
FA Cup — third round onward
Every drawn tie from the third round is TBD until the prior round completes. The Football Association conducts each draw live on television within hours of the prior round closing — typically the Sunday or Monday after weekend ties — and listings move from TBD to confirmed within the same evening.
- 02
Champions League — knockout phase
The Round of 16 draw at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon takes place the Monday after the group stage concludes in mid-December. Quarter-final, semi-final and final-allocation draws follow on UEFA-published dates and convert TBD inventory into confirmed fixtures the same morning.
- 03
Europa League and Europa Conference — play-offs and knockouts
The Europa League's knockout play-off round and Round of 16 produce two TBD waves per season — one at the autumn draw, one at the December draw — and the Europa Conference follows the same cadence on the same draw dates.
- 04
EFL Cup — fourth round onward
Carabao Cup ties from the fourth round are TBD until the prior round completes. The draws are conducted on television immediately after the late-round broadcast windows.
- 05
UEFA Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds
The summer qualifying-round draws (first, second, third qualifying and play-off rounds) produce a long sequence of TBD fixtures across June and July as each round resolves and the next is drawn.
- 06
International friendlies and qualifying play-offs
FIFA international windows produce TBD opponents for venues and dates confirmed months in advance. Qualification play-offs for the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship and continental tournaments are also high-volume TBD generators.
How it works
How the marketplace handles TBD inventory
On Anyseats, every listing for a TBD fixture carries an explicit "TBD" marker on the listing card, on the seat-map view, and on the checkout summary. The marker shows which detail is unconfirmed — opposition, kick-off time, or rescheduled date — so the buyer has the same information the seller does at the point of order.
Sellers list TBD inventory for one of three reasons. First, season-ticket holders committing to sell their seat for a specific date regardless of opponent (the most common case). Second, hospitality and corporate-allocation holders unwinding inventory before the draw confirms. Third, traders speculating on the draw outcome — these are the smallest cohort and are typically priced furthest from the eventual settled price.
The 100% Buyer Guarantee applies from the moment of payment confirmation regardless of the TBD status. If the eventual fixture is cancelled outright, you receive a full refund within 14 days. If the fixture is rescheduled to a date you cannot make, the same refund applies on request. The guarantee does not refund orders solely because the drawn opponent is not the one the buyer had hoped for — the underlying fixture has not been changed in any way the guarantee is built to cover.
Calendar
When TBD fixtures typically get confirmed
- FA Cup draws. Conducted live on BBC One within hours of the prior round closing — typically the Sunday or Monday after weekend ties. Listings move from TBD to confirmed within the same evening.
- Champions League draws. The UEFA Nyon draw schedule publishes Round of 16 in mid-December, quarter-finals and semi-finals in mid-to-late March, and final allocation in early April. Each draw converts TBD inventory the same morning.
- Europa League and Europa Conference draws. Held on UEFA-published dates in December and February, the Europa-tier draws release TBD fixtures across two separate waves per season.
- EFL Cup draws. Conducted on television immediately after the late-round broadcast windows, typically the same evening as the prior round's televised ties.
- Premier League rescheduling. Weather-postponed and televised-fixture rescheduling normally lands seven to fourteen days before the new date. Kick-off time selection for televised fixtures is published six to eight weeks ahead of the match window.
- UEFA summer qualifying rounds. First, second, third qualifying and play-off rounds run from late June to late August, with each draw following the prior round's completion.
If the fixture changes
What happens if your fixture changes
The most common change between order and match day is the opposition reveal. If you ordered a TBD ticket and the eventual drawn opponent is not the one you had hoped for, the ticket remains valid — the fixture itself has not been changed, only your expectation of it. Anyseats does not refund orders on this basis. The seat is still yours, the date is still confirmed, and the ticket will scan at the gate.
If the change runs the other way — the original fixture is cancelled outright, rescheduled to a date you cannot make, or moved to a venue inaccessible to you — the 100% Buyer Guarantee covers a full refund within 14 days. The refund process is handled by our match-day support team, reachable on live chat, WhatsApp, and email from doors-open through full-time on every match day.
If the change is a kick-off time selection within the same day, the ticket remains valid. Premier League kick-off shifts (12:30, 15:00, 17:30, 20:00) are confirmed six to eight weeks ahead of the fixture and do not trigger Buyer Guarantee refunds. Travel and accommodation booked around a different kick-off time are not refundable under the guarantee — we strongly recommend waiting for the broadcast-window confirmation before committing to non-refundable travel.

FAQ
TBD football tickets — FAQ
What does TBD mean on a football ticket listing?
TBD stands for "to be determined" — the fixture exists in the competition calendar but the opposition, kick-off time, or both have not yet been confirmed. The most common cases are cup-knockout rounds (the opponent is still in an earlier round), Champions League and Europa League play-off ties (the seeding depends on group-stage finishing positions still being played out), and weather-postponed matches awaiting a rescheduled date. TBA — "to be announced" — is used interchangeably across European football media and means the same thing.
When do TBD football fixtures typically get confirmed?
It depends on the competition. FA Cup draws are conducted live on television within hours of the round it follows — usually the Sunday or Monday after the prior round closes. Champions League and Europa League knockout draws happen in Nyon at fixed UEFA-published dates, typically the Monday after the group-stage or play-off round concludes. Premier League fixture-rescheduling (after postponements) is normally confirmed seven to fourteen days before the new date. Kick-off time selection for televised fixtures is published by the Premier League six to eight weeks ahead of the match window.
Can I buy a ticket for a TBD or TBA fixture before the opponent is confirmed?
Yes — some sellers list inventory for known calendar slots even when the opposition has not yet been drawn, particularly for season-ticket holders selling their seat for a specific date rather than a specific opponent. The Anyseats marketplace makes the TBD status explicit on the listing card and on the seat-map view so you can decide whether to commit before the draw. The 100% Buyer Guarantee covers the order from the moment you check out — if the eventual fixture is cancelled or moved to a date you cannot make, our refund policy applies.
What happens to my ticket if the opponent isn't who I expected?
The ticket entitles you to attend the seat at the date and venue printed on it, regardless of who the opposition turns out to be. If the eventual opponent makes the fixture less appealing, you have two options — attend anyway (the ticket is still valid), or contact our match-day support to discuss a possible resale through the marketplace. Anyseats does not refund tickets purely because the drawn opponent is not the one a buyer had hoped for; the fixture itself has not been changed in any way the 100% Buyer Guarantee covers.
What does the Anyseats 100% Buyer Guarantee cover for TBD fixtures?
The Buyer Guarantee covers four scenarios that affect TBD bookings in the same way they affect any other order: the match is cancelled outright with no replacement (full refund within 14 days), the match is rescheduled to a date you cannot make (full refund on request), you are denied entry at the gate despite holding a verified ticket (automatic refund), and the ticket fails to deliver before the cut-off (automatic refund plus an apology credit). The guarantee does not cover changes in the identity of the opponent, the kick-off time within the same day, or weather-related delays that do not result in postponement.
Which cup competitions most commonly have TBD fixtures?
The FA Cup is the highest-volume source of TBD fixtures in the English football calendar — from the third round onward, every drawn tie is TBD until the prior round completes. The Champions League knockout phase, the Europa League play-off and knockout rounds, the Europa Conference League knockout rounds, the EFL Cup from the fourth round, and qualifying-round play-offs for all UEFA competitions are the other major TBD generators. International tournaments produce TBD fixtures during the group-stage period (knockout opponents are unknown until the group standings finalise). The bare /football-tickets hub lists every confirmed fixture across these competitions.
Are TBD tickets more expensive or cheaper than confirmed fixtures?
TBD inventory typically prices below the comparable confirmed-fixture inventory because of the uncertainty premium — buyers discount the value of a ticket they cannot fully evaluate. Once the draw is made, prices on the same seat can rise sharply if the drawn opponent is high-profile (a Manchester United vs Liverpool draw in the FA Cup will move prices within minutes of the live televised draw). The early-buyer discount is real but the risk is also real; the trade-off is best understood as buying optionality on the eventual fixture rather than a confirmed booking.
