FAQ
World Cup 2026 — frequently asked
Who is hosting the 2026 World Cup?
The United States, Canada and Mexico share hosting duties — the first time three nations have co-hosted a World Cup. The US holds 11 of the 16 venues and stages every match from the quarter-finals onwards, including the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Mexico hosts the opening match at the Estadio Azteca on 11 June 2026.
When is the World Cup 2026 final?
Sunday 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Capacity 82,500 — the largest venue ever to host a World Cup Final.
How many teams are in the 2026 World Cup?
48 teams — up from 32 in previous editions. The expansion brings new groups (12 instead of 8) and a new knockout round of 32 before the round of 16.
How does the new 48-team format work?
Twelve groups of four play a single round-robin (three matches each). The top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed sides — 32 teams in total — advance to a knockout round of 32. From there it's straight knockout: R16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place play-off, final. Champion plays five knockouts in a row to lift the trophy.
Are World Cup 2026 tickets still available?
Yes. FIFA's Last-Minute Sales Phase is currently open and runs through 19 July 2026 on a first-come-first-served basis at face value where supply exists. Anyseats lists verified secondary-market tickets from sellers in our authentication network when face-value supply has sold out — every listing identity-matched, every order backed by the 100% Buyer Guarantee.
What's the difference between FIFA's ticket categories?
Category 1 = closest to the pitch, best sight-lines (highest priced). Category 2 = lower-bowl peripheral. Category 3 = upper-bowl (most accessible). Category 4 is reserved for citizens of the three host nations only. Hospitality and conditional supporter tickets (a single team's entire potential knockout run) are sold separately.
Where will the opening match be played?
Estadio Azteca, Mexico City — 11 June 2026, Mexico v South Africa. The Azteca becomes the first stadium in history to host three World Cups (1970, 1986, 2026).
