History
About Stadion Graz-Liebenau
The Bundesstadion Liebenau opened on 9 June 1951 and was covered and extended in 1970. The city took it over in the 1990s and replaced it with a new stadium designed by Team A Graz, with work starting on 9 January 1995. The new ground opened on 9 July 1997 as the Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadion, and Sturm beat Grazer AK 4–0 in the first match. Schwarzenegger’s name was removed in December 2005, the ground became the UPC-Arena in February 2006 and the Merkur-Arena in 2016, and it has been Stadion Graz-Liebenau again since the Merkur naming deal ended on 1 March 2026.
