History

About Rajko Mitić Stadium

Red Star took over the 1927 ground of SK Jugoslavija on the site after the Second World War, and the present stadium was built between 1960 and 1963, with the pitch dug 12 metres lower than before. It opened on 1 September 1963 with a 2–1 win over Rijeka watched by 55,000, and when building was finished the following year it held 110,000. Seats were later fitted on all four stands to meet UEFA rules, cutting capacity to 49,167. Known as the Red Star Stadium, it was renamed in December 2014 after Rajko Mitić, the club’s first star player, who died in 2008.
