History
About Lyse Arena
Building began in April 2003 and the stadium opened on 1 May 2004, replacing Stavanger Stadion as Viking’s home. It cost NOK 160 million (about €20 million), and the municipality gave NOK 50 million and the plot it stands on. Capacity was raised from 15,300 to 16,600 in 2006, cut to 16,300 in 2012 to make room for two large screens, and settled at 15,900 from 2018, when the grass pitch was replaced with artificial turf. The ground was called Viking Stadion until April 2018, SR-Bank Arena under a deal with SpareBank 1 SR-Bank until 2025, and Lyse Arena since January 2025 under a five-year naming deal with the energy company Lyse.
Seating layout
Lyse Arena seating plan & capacity
Seating is sold by lettered sections (felt) from A to Q, with the home supporters’ pub Di mørkeblå inside the ground. Visiting supporters have their own away section, and Viking say away colours may only be worn there.
West Stand
Originally all-seated, parts of the west stand have since been converted to safe standing.
South Stand
One of the two stands that a 2009 plan would have given an upper tier, an expansion that was not built.
East Stand
The other stand in the shelved 2009 upper-tier plan, which would have taken capacity to 22,000.
