History

About King Baudouin Stadium

The stadium opened on 23 August 1930 as the Jubilee Stadium, built for the centenary of Belgian independence on the Heysel plateau, and held 70,000 at the time. It was renamed the Heysel Stadium in 1946. On 29 May 1985, 39 Juventus supporters died before the European Cup final against Liverpool. The ground was rebuilt at a cost of about €37 million and reopened on 23 August 1995 as the King Baudouin Stadium, named after the king who had died in 1993; only a renovated gateway near the main entrance remains of the old stadium.
