History

About Ibrox Stadium

Rangers moved to the Ibrox area in 1887 and opened the present ground, then called Ibrox Park, with a 3–1 win over Hearts on 30 December 1899. A wooden terrace collapsed during Scotland v England on 5 April 1902, killing 25 people, and Archibald Leitch’s red-brick Main Stand opened on 1 January 1929. After 66 people died in a crush on Stairway 13 following the Old Firm match on 2 January 1971, the club replaced the open terracing with three all-seated stands between 1978 and 1981. The Club Deck was added to the Main Stand in 1991, the ground was renamed Ibrox Stadium in 1997, and the Copland Road Stand was extended in 2024, taking capacity to 51,700.

Seating layout

Ibrox Stadium seating plan & capacity

Four covered all-seated stands surround the pitch: three have two tiers and the Main Stand has three. The two corners beside the Sandy Jardine Stand were filled with seating in the 1990s.

  • Bill Struth Main Stand

South side stand on Edmiston Drive, opened in 1929 and now three tiers with about 21,000 seats; its red-brick façade is listed.

  • Sandy Jardine Stand

North side two-tier stand completed in 1981 as the Govan Stand and renamed after Sandy Jardine in 2014.

  • Copland Road Stand

East end stand completed in 1979, traditionally the Rangers end; a rear cantilever section was added in 2024.

  • Broomloan Road Stand

West end stand completed in 1980; visiting supporters sit in the corner between it and the Sandy Jardine Stand.
